HVAC Technician
DEFINITION
To perform a wide variety of skilled tasks involved in the maintenance and repair of ventilation, heating and air conditioning units related to the care and maintenance of Southern Nevada Health District buildings and facilities

- This class is distinguished by being at the journey level performing work with a minimum of supervision
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
- Receives general supervision from the Facilities Services Manager
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES—This class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive. Incumbent(s) may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skills.
- Inspect air-conditioning units to ensure efficient operation
- Perform regularly scheduled maintenance on heating and cooling units
- Diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions; install, replace or repair damaged equipment; calibrate thermostatic controls
- Install new heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems; repair and replace damaged or worn heating, ventilation and air-conditioning parts and equipment; repair or replace low and high pressure liquid lines
- Inspect and observe pressure of liquids and vapor with instrumentation to ensure efficient operation of units and make necessary adjustments; inspect and service refrigeration equipment including refrigerators, ice machines, gas packs and heat pumps
- Maintain the chilled and hot water supply systems
- Adjust and maintain internal electrical and electronic control systems; clean coils and blowers and check motors and belt tensions
- Assemble and install metal ductwork
- Assist in planning and designing of new installations of heating and air-conditioning systems
- Maintain maintenance records as required by City, State and EPA regulations
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Principle and practice of HVAC maintenance and repair; hazard and safety practices common to the trade
- HVAC controls and safety devices; appropriate MSDS sheets; tools of the trade; materials and refrigerant recovery equipment and procedures used in installing, repairing and maintaining HVAC systems.
- Computerized electrical circuits and systems as they relate to air-conditioning, heating, ventilation and refrigerated cooling
- Sheet metal, electrical, plumbing and carpentry
Ability to:
- Interpret building codes and regulations as they relate to HVAC
- Properly install refrigerant compressors
- Diagnose problems and make recommendations
- Make estimates of materials required
- Repair and replace damaged parts and equipment
- Read blueprints, floor plans and wiring diagrams
- Read and interpret City, State and EPA regulations
- Work independently in the absence of supervision
- Understand and follow oral and written directions
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
Training and Experience Guidelines
Training:
- Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Appropriate specialized training in the skills needed in heating and air-conditioning systems repair and installation.
Experience:
- Four years of journeyman experience in heating, air-conditioning and energy management in Direct Digital Control Systems, two of which were spent in commercial HVAC
Working Conditions
- Exposure to dust, noise, fumes, high voltage and toxic materials
- Work or inspect in confined and/or hot spaces including but not limited to attics, crawl ways and roofs
- Heavy lifting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, walking, standing for prolonged periods of time
- Work in adverse weather conditions
License or Certificate
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Nevada driver’s license
- Possession of an EPA Refrigerant Technician Type I and II certification on the date of application
- Possession of an EPA Refrigerant Technician Universal certification within six months of the date of appointment
Conditions:
All required licenses must be maintained in an active status without suspension or revocation throughout employment. Any employee may be required to stay at or return to work during public health incidents and/or emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned response position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the incident and/or emergency.
New employees must complete Incident Command System training, ICS 100, ICS 200 and NIMS as a condition of continuing employment, prior to the completion of the probationary period.
